Ophthalmic Laser-Alternative Patent Awarded to Eidolon Optical, LLC

NATICK, MA — Eidolon Optical, LLC (Eidolon), a medical device company that designs and manufactures ocular handheld diagnostic instruments, has been issued U.S Patent 10,820,798 titled “Non-Coherent Light delivery System and Method” for a Wellesley/Olin College women-lead project it funded and directed: Solar Surgery.

Solar Surgery Tracking Telescope

Solar Surgery aims to develop a low-cost laser to enable clinics in impoverished rural areas to perform ophthalmic surgical operations. The system can be used to perform refractive surgeries, photocoagulation, retinal surgeries, and iridotomies. It is especially suited for angle-closure glaucoma treatment, a condition that can cause blindness if not tended. In China, for instance, an estimated 400,000 people go blind every year due to the lack of access to angle-closure glaucoma treatments.

The work of Dina Aouani, Ana Balcells, Samantha Chin, Michael Costello, Brenna Manning, Yada Pruksachatkun, Rachel Utomo and Sormeh Yazdi (then-students at Wellesley College and Olin College of Engineering) and of Eidolon Optical, LLC resulted in the design of a solar tracking device with unmatchable accuracy. The device collects sunlight and turns the Sun’s image into a perfect square image. Using the convolution of this square image, with a quad cell enables the system to figure out the position of the sun in one iteration, with a linear function. This is a big departure from systems that need several iterations to non-linearly determine the position of the Sun. (More information about the invention available on uspto.gov)
